Ellen. They’re separated by Slide Brook Basin, an ungroomed 2,000-acre wilderness that a two-mile chairlift flies directly over. Its visitors enjoy some of the most demanding terrain in the East paired with two distinct base areas, premier accommodations, and the villages of Warren and Waitsfield nearby. Lincoln Peak is the main hub, holding 72 of the resort’s 111 trails along with the village, ski school, and rentals—plus Castlerock, a preserve of narrow, steep, winding trails served by a slow double chair that deliberately limits how many skiers get in. Mt. Ellen is quieter and more understated, with wide cruisers, strong intermediate terrain, the Riemergasse Terrain Park, and a rustic base lodge. Twenty-eight marked tree areas run across both. Between them sits Slide Brook Basin, ungroomed and unpatrolled, where skiers ride a shuttle back to the base when they come out the bottom. ## Everything you need to know ### How do I get to Sugarbush? Burlington International Airport (BTV) is is about an hour away and is the closest major option, with taxis, car rentals, and group transfers available. Albany (ALB) is roughly two and a half hours, Boston (BOS) about three and a half. The resort sits around 25 minutes off I-89 via Route 100 through the Mad River Valley. ### Which base address should I use? This matters more here than at most resorts. Lincoln Peak is 102 Forest Drive in Warren; Mt. Ellen is 626 Mt. Ellen Road in Waitsfield. They’re different mountains in different towns, and navigation apps will happily send you to the wrong one. Confirm which base you’re headed to before you set off. ### Is there a shuttle between the two mountains? Yes, and it’s free. The Mad Bus runs between Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen roughly every 20 to 30 minutes from late December through March, picking up at the main base entrance at Lincoln Peak and in front of the main lodge at Mt. Ellen. It also serves the condominium areas and the valley’s business district. ### What’s the Slide Brook Express? A two-mile chairlift connecting Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen over the Slide Brook Basin. It’s a scenic ride when it’s running, but it doesn’t operate every day, and the resort itself describes the bus as the more reliable way to move between the mountains. Plan around the shuttle and treat the lift as a bonus. ### Should I ski Lincoln Peak or Mt. Ellen? Lincoln Peak is the main hub, holding 72 of the 111 trails, the village, the ski school, rentals, and most of the dining, along with Castlerock and the most varied terrain. Mt. Ellen is quieter, with a rustic base lodge, strong intermediate cruisers, the terrain park, and generally shorter lines. ### What is Castlerock? An expert area on Lincoln Peak with narrow, steep, winding trails and no snowmaking. It’s served deliberately by a slow double chair, which limits how many people are on it at once. Because it relies entirely on natural cover, it often doesn’t open until later in the season. ### What is Slide Brook Basin? A 2,000-acre expanse of ungroomed, unpatrolled terrain between the two mountains. There’s no snowmaking and no grooming, and it’s ski-at-your-own-risk. Skiers who come out the bottom catch a shuttle back. Never ski it alone, and confirm the buses are running before you drop in. ### How big is Sugarbush? The resort spans 111 trails across Lincoln Peak and Mt. Ellen, with 2,600 feet of vertical and a summit at 3,975 feet on the Lincoln Peak side. Twenty-eight marked tree-skiing areas run across both mountains, and the resort has one of the highest uphill capacities in the Northeast. ### Can beginners ski Sugarbush? Yes, though it isn’t primarily a beginner mountain. Lincoln Peak has accessible green terrain and the ski school, and Mt. Ellen suits progressing intermediates well. But Sugarbush’s character is built around demanding terrain, and true first-timers may find gentler options elsewhere in Vermont. ### Is Sugarbush good for advanced skiers? It’s among the best in the East. Castlerock, Rumble Woods, and runs like Stein’s Run and Paradise draw serious skiers, and Heaven’s Gate on upper Lincoln Peak opens intermediate-to-expert terrain with wide views. Add 28 tree areas and Slide Brook, and there’s more here than most eastern mountains offer. ### Is there parking, and does it cost anything? Both base areas have parking, and most of it is free. Lincoln Peak fills earlier given that it’s the main hub, so arriving early or parking at Mt. Ellen and taking the shuttle over are both reasonable strategies on busy days. ### What’s in the Mad River Valley? Warren and Waitsfield are the two villages, with independent restaurants, shops, and inns along Route 100. Mad River Glen, the co-op ski area, is nearby, and the Long Trail runs through the area.
