Stowe spans two mountains connected by a transfer gondola, and they serve different skiers: Spruce Peak holds the learning terrain, gentle groomers, and family programming, while Mount Mansfield carries the Front Four and the steeps that made the resort’s name. Between them sit long intermediate cruisers like Perry Merrill and Ridge Run. More than half the mountain is rated intermediate, and the Toll Road runs 4.3 miles from top to bottom. Down the Mountain Road, the village of Stowe has been receiving skiers since the 1930s, and the Mount Mansfield Ski Patrol is the oldest in the country. ## Everything you need to know ### How do I get to Stowe? Burlington International Airport (BTV) is about 40 minutes away on mostly interstate roads, with nonstop service from Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Newark, JFK, LaGuardia, Philadelphia, Orlando, and Toronto. Morrisville-Stowe State Airport (MVL) sits roughly 20 minutes from the resort and handles smaller aircraft, with scheduled service from Westchester (HPN). ### Can I get to Stowe by train? Yes. Amtrak’s Vermonter runs daily between Washington, D.C., and northern Vermont with a stop in Waterbury, about 15 minutes from Stowe. From there you’ll need a taxi or shuttle, there are no rental car agencies within Stowe’s town limits. ### Do I need a rental car in Stowe? It helps. Green Mountain Transit runs a free Mountain Road Shuttle between Stowe Village and the resort during winter, and airport shuttle services operate from Burlington. But rideshare coverage is limited here, and lodging is spread along Mountain Road, so many visitors find a car easier. ### Where should I park? Park on the Mount Mansfield side. Free lots include Mansfield Base Lodge, Over Easy Gondola, Midway, the B lots, Toll House, and the Cross Country Center, with EV charging in the lower B lot. Parking at Spruce Peak is limited and paid, so the resort recommends parking at Mansfield and riding the free Over Easy Gondola over. ### What’s the difference between Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak? Mount Mansfield is Vermont’s highest peak and holds the terrain Stowe is known for, including the Front Four. Spruce Peak is gentler, with learning areas, family programming, and a modern base village. The Over Easy Gondola connects them, so you can ski both in a day. ### What are the Front Four? Goat, National, Liftline, and Starr: four steep, largely ungroomed trails on Mount Mansfield, cut decades ago and left mostly as they were. They’re narrow, bumped, and unforgiving, and they’re the reason Stowe has the reputation it does among strong eastern skiers. ### How big is Stowe? Stowe covers 485 skiable acres across 116 trails, served by 12 lifts including two gondolas. It’s compact by western standards, but the trails run long: the Toll Road stretches 4.3 miles, and the resort claims the longest average trail length in the East. ### Can beginners ski Stowe? Yes. Spruce Peak holds the dedicated learning areas and gentle groomers like Easy Street and Inspiration, separated from the steeper terrain on Mansfield. About 16% of the resort is rated beginner, so first-timers should plan on staying mostly on the Spruce side. ### Is Stowe good for advanced skiers? Yes. Beyond the Front Four, Mansfield holds glades, steeps, and narrow New England-style trails that ski harder than their acreage suggests. Roughly 30% of the terrain is rated advanced or expert, concentrated on the Mansfield side. ### Why is Stowe historically significant? Stowe is widely credited as the birthplace of alpine skiing in Vermont, with lift-served skiing dating to the late 1930s. The Mount Mansfield Ski Patrol is the oldest ski patrol in the United States, and the town has been receiving skiers for close to a century. ### What is there to do in Stowe besides skiing? The village has been named among the best small towns in America, with independent shops, restaurants, and inns along Route 100 and Mountain Road. Spruce Peak Village adds an outdoor skating rink, a performing arts center, and dining. Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, and the Stowe Recreation Path fill out the rest. ## All homes in Stowe - [Art Rocks](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089047) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Aspenbrook](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089015) · 5 bd · sleeps 12 - [Cocktails and Catamounts](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1121150) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Cozy Stowe Village Retreat](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089018) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 - [Griffin Chalet 1](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1128312) · 1 bd · sleeps 2 - [Griffin Chalet 2](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1128313) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 - [Griffin Chalet 3](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1128314) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 - [Griffin Chalet 4](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1128315) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 - [Griffin Chalet 5](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1128316) · 1 bd · sleeps 2 - [Harvest Carriage House](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089031) · 3 bd · sleeps 6 - [Harvest Farmhouse](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089030) · 4 bd · sleeps 8 - [Harvest House & Carriage](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089024) · 6 bd · sleeps 14 - [Mansfield View Memories](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089029) · 4 bd · sleeps 10 - [Mountain Heart at Mountainside Resort F101](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1121168) · 1 bd · sleeps 4 - [Mountain View at Mountainside Resort K103](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089012) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 - [Mountainside Resort A101](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088995) · 1 bd · sleeps 4 - [Mountainside Resort B202](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089035) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 - [Mountainside Resort F302](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089055) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 - [Mountainside Resort F303](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089028) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Mountainside Resort G204](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089057) · 3 bd · sleeps 6 - [Mountainside Resort G303](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089013) · 3 bd · sleeps 6 - [Mountainside Resort H203](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089020) · 2 bd · sleeps 8 - [Mountainside Resort J203](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089027) · 2 bd · sleeps 5 - [Mountainside Resort K105](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089017) · 3 bd · sleeps 10 - [Mountainside Resort K204](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089025) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 - [Pineapple Paradise](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089014) · 4 bd · sleeps 8 - [Ski Bike the East](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089042) · 6 bd · sleeps 12 - [Slopeside Getaway](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089053) · 3 bd · sleeps 6 - [Sterling Pond House](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1121131) · 4 bd · sleeps 8 - [Stowe Mountain Road Escape](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088994) · sleeps 4 - [Stowe Mountain Road Getaway](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089019) · 1 bd · sleeps 4 - [Stowe Mountain Road Retreat](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089064) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 - [The Hoppy Skier](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1121170) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Village Green Unit 1A](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089033) · 2 bd · sleeps 8 - [VT - Stowe OB-VTSS179](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1142943) · 4 bd · sleeps 8 - [West Branch Little River Retreat](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1089049) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 --- For photos, current rates and availability, see the page: https://www.firstchair.com/destinations/vermont/stowe
