Its visitors enjoy 2,190 feet of vertical and 73 trails spread across 403 acres on three peaks, with intermediate terrain making up the biggest share. The high-speed Kancamagus 8 and a gondola to the summit of Loon Peak keep skiers moving, and extensive snowmaking backs up a New Hampshire winter that doesn't always cooperate. Being just a few miles off the interstate makes Loon Mountain an easy weekend from Boston, with Lincoln's restaurants, breweries, and shops a short drive from the lifts. In summer and fall, the gondola carries visitors back up to Loon Peak for glacial caves, hiking, and mountaintop disc golf, while a zipline crosses the Pemigewasset River at the base. ## Everything you need to know ### How do I get to Lincoln? Loon is about three miles off I-93, roughly two to two and a half hours from Boston, three hours from Montreal, three and a half from Hartford, and five and a half from New York City. Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) is the closest major airport at about an hour and a half, with Boston Logan (BOS) about two hours away. ### Is Loon on the Ikon Pass? Yes. The Ikon Pass includes five days at Loon. ### How big is Loon? 403 acres and 73 trails, with 2,190 feet of vertical from a 3,050-foot summit, served by 13 lifts including a four-passenger gondola. ### Does Loon have good snowmaking? Yes. Snowmaking is one of Loon’s strengths and bills its system as the biggest in New Hampshire, covering over 86 percent of the terrain, and the mountain runs six terrain parks. ### Is Loon good for beginners? Yes. Loon has a snowsports school and children’s center for first-timers, and the mountain’s wide range of intermediate cruisers makes it a natural next step once beginners leave the learning areas. ### Is Loon good for intermediates? Yes. 53 percent of the trails are rated intermediate, the largest share of the mountain. 19 percent are rated beginner and 28 percent rated expert. ### What is there to do in Lincoln besides ski? Lincoln and North Woodstock sit at the west end of the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountain National Forest. Clark's Bears, the Whale's Tale Water Park, and Lost River Gorge and Boulder Caves are all nearby, and Franconia Notch is a few minutes north. ### Is Loon open in summer? Yes. Summer operations include a scenic gondola skyride to the summit and its glacial caves, an aerial forest adventure park, ziplines, and a climbing wall. ### Do I need a rental car at Loon? Most guests drive. The mountain is three miles off I-93 and the towns of Lincoln and North Woodstock spread along Route 112, so a car makes the area much easier to use.
