At Big Sky Resort, beginners have a dedicated area separated from the high-speed slopes, while experienced skiers come for what the mountain is actually built around: the Lone Peak Tram to the summit, the couloirs and chutes off Headwaters and Challenger, and 4,350 feet of vertical. Beyond the slopes, the community spreads across three districts along the Gallatin Canyon, with the blue-ribbon trout water of the Gallatin River running the length of it. ## Everything you need to know ### How do I get to Big Sky? Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN) is about 50 miles north, roughly an hour’s drive down Highway 191 through the Gallatin Canyon. It offers nonstop service from around two dozen U.S. cities in winter. Rental cars and shuttle services both operate from the airport, and shuttles should be booked in advance. ### How far is Big Sky from Bozeman? About 50 miles, an hour by car on Highway 191 through the Gallatin Canyon. The Skyline bus runs a scheduled route between the two for a low fare. ### Do I need a rental car in Big Sky? It helps more than in most ski towns. Skyline runs zero-fare service within Big Sky year-round, connecting the Canyon, Meadow Village, Town Center, and Mountain Village. But the community is spread across the canyon, and a car makes Yellowstone trips, Bozeman dinners, and general logistics much easier. ### Is Big Sky walkable? Within each area, yes. Mountain Village is a pedestrian ski base, and Town Center is compact. But Big Sky isn’t one walkable town, the districts climb the canyon and are separated by miles. Plan on the bus or a car to move between them. ### Where should I stay in Big Sky? Mountain Village is the ski-in/ski-out pedestrian base. Madison Base and Moonlight Basin sit on the north side of Lone Mountain. Meadow Village and Town Center are down the canyon, quieter and closer to grocery stores, restaurants, and Highway 191. ### Can beginners ski Big Sky? Yes, but know what you’re getting into. Big Sky has a dedicated beginner area separated from the high-speed slopes, and there’s plenty of intermediate terrain. That said, roughly 60% of the mountain is rated advanced, so beginners will use a smaller share of the acreage. ### Is Big Sky good for advanced skiers? Exceptionally. The Lone Peak Tram reaches 11,166 feet, and the terrain off it includes the triple-black Big Couloir, which requires patrol sign-out. The Headwaters and A-Z chutes off the Challenger and Headwaters lifts are among the best inbounds freeride skiing in North America. ### Is the Lone Peak Tram included with a lift ticket? Yes. Big Sky Resort now includes tram access with lift tickets, for both skiing and scenic rides. This changed recently, so older guides may say otherwise. The summit also holds Kircliff, a glass observatory with 360-degree views across Yellowstone, the Tetons, and more than ten ranges. ### How far is Big Sky from Yellowstone National Park? The West Entrance is about an hour and a half south on Highway 191. Big Sky works well as a basecamp, though winter access into the park is limited to guided snowcoach and snowmobile tours rather than driving yourself. ### How much snow does Big Sky get? More than 400 inches in a typical year. The high base elevation helps preserve snow quality into spring, and the season often runs through late April, later than many western resorts. ### Is Big Sky a good place to visit in the summer? Yes. Scenic tram rides, hiking including the family-friendly Ousel Falls trail, mountain biking, and rafting and fly fishing on the Gallatin River all run through the season. It’s also the quietest time of year, and Yellowstone is fully drivable. ### How many days should I stay in Big Sky? Five days or more is worth it here. The mountain is large enough that three days barely covers it, and the travel investment favors a longer stay. Groups renting a home often plan a week, with a Yellowstone day worked in. ## All homes in Big Sky - [Alpenglow 37C](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088024) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Beaverhead 201](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088029) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Big Horn 18](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088020) · 3 bd · sleeps 10 - [Big Horn 19](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088065) · 4 bd · sleeps 12 - [Big Horn 3](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088031) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Big Horn 65](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1087986) · 3 bd · sleeps 10 - [Big Sky Bliss](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088069) · 3 bd · sleeps 9 - [Delightful Dreams](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088059) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 - [Ducks Unlimited 173](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088055) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Gallatin Peaks 1](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1087998) · 2 bd · sleeps 7 - [Hidden Village 20 Woodbine](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088032) · 4 bd · sleeps 10 - [Hidden Village 700 Sunburst](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088023) · 4 bd · sleeps 8 - [Hill Condo 1302](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088039) · sleeps 3 - [Lone Walker Home](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1087970) · 3 bd · sleeps 6 - [Moonlight Mountain House](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1130704) · 3 bd · sleeps 6 - [Moose Alley Chalet](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088052) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Moose Crossing at Town Center](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088070) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Moose Hill 59](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1087983) · 4 bd · sleeps 10 - [Morning Sun 2061B](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088053) · 3 bd · sleeps 9 - [Mountain Meadow Retreat](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088068) · 3 bd · sleeps 6 - [Mountain View Escape](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088040) · 1 bd · sleeps 4 - [Park 282](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088033) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 - [Pineridge Patio](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1120797) · 2 bd · sleeps 5 - [Saddle Ridge A5](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088022) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Saddle Ridge B2](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1087979) · 3 bd · sleeps 7 - [Saddle Ridge B4](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088057) · 3 bd · sleeps 9 - [Saddle Ridge I-5](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1087982) · 3 bd · sleeps 9 - [Saddle Ridge I2](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1087985) · 3 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1904](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088043) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1909](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088051) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1913](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088041) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1917](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088036) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1919](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088049) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1922](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088071) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1930](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088061) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1954](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088026) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1960](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088028) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1965](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088050) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1972](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1087984) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1981](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088048) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Shoshone 1986](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088027) · 1 bd · sleeps 7 - [Shoshone 1993](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088035) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [The Hip Rose](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088060) · 3 bd · sleeps 7 - [The Overlooker, Apt A11](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088066) · 2 bd · sleeps 8 --- For photos, current rates and availability, see the page: https://www.firstchair.com/destinations/montana/big-sky
