Sunday River covers roughly 870 acres across 135 trails, rising 2,340 vertical feet from an 800-foot base. Each of the eight peaks has its own character: Jordan Bowl draws the crowds, Aurora Peak stays quieter, White Cap holds the steep terrain including White Heat, and North Peak is family territory. Nearly 300 acres are developed glades. The lift network includes New England’s only Chondola, a hybrid that runs six-person chairs and gondola cabins on the same line, plus an eight-passenger chair serving Jordan Bowl. Snowmaking covers about 95% of the mountain, which is why the conditions hold when the weather doesn’t. ## Everything you need to know ### How do I get to Sunday River? Portland International Jetport (PWM) is the nearest commercial airport, about an hour and 45 minutes away by car. Boston Logan (BOS) is roughly three hours. ### How far is Sunday River from Boston and New York? Boston is about three hours north via I-95 and US-2. New York is closer to six. Sunday River draws heavily from the Boston metro area, which means weekends and holiday weeks run busier than midweek. ### Do I need a rental car at Sunday River? Yes, more than at most resorts. There’s no train or scheduled bus service to the mountain, and the resort sits several miles outside Bethel. Free shuttles cover the base areas and lodging once you arrive, but you’ll want a vehicle to get here and to reach town. ### Is there a shuttle? Yes. Resort shuttles run year-round connecting lodging properties, base lodges, and parking areas. The Mountain Explorer connects the resort with Bethel, stopping in town and along Sunday River Road. Shuttles run fixed routes and won’t stop off-route. ### Which peaks are least crowded? Lines tend to concentrate at Jordan Bowl, Barker, and South Ridge, particularly on weekends. Aurora Peak and Oz are generally quieter. Because the peaks are connected, moving away from the busiest lifts costs you very little time. ### What are the three base areas? South Ridge is the main base with the ski school and learning terrain. Barker Mountain serves as the central access hub. White Cap sits at the eastern end near the steepest terrain. Lodging, dining, rentals, and shops are distributed across all three rather than concentrated in one village. ### Can beginners ski Sunday River? Yes, exceptionally well. Roughly a third of the terrain is rated beginner, and the peaks are connected well enough that a new skier can descend from the summit of Jordan Bowl and cross six mountains to the White Cap base without leaving green terrain. Few resorts anywhere allow that. ### Is Sunday River good for advanced skiers? Yes. White Cap holds the steepest terrain, including White Heat, and the resort has nearly 300 acres of developed glades. Roughly 30% of the mountain is rated advanced or expert. It’s balanced rather than extreme, and strong skiers will find plenty without it being an expert-only mountain. ### What is the Chondola? A hybrid lift, the only one in New England, running six-person open chairs and enclosed gondola cabins on the same cable. It runs from South Ridge to North Peak, which makes it useful in bad weather and popular with families and non-skiers heading up for dinner. ### What’s in Bethel? Bethel sits about six miles away, five to ten minutes by car, and has been repeatedly ranked among the best ski towns in the country. It has a walkable village with restaurants, shops, and inns, plus nordic trails, and provides the town atmosphere the base areas don’t. ### How many days should I stay at Sunday River? Four to five days works well given eight peaks to cover and the drive from Boston or Portland. Weekend trips are common from New England, but a longer stay lets you spread out across the mountain and spend time in Bethel. ## All homes in Newry - [Après Chalet](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088362) · 4 bd · sleeps 12 - [Bear River Chalet](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088379) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Fall Line S205](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088274) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Fall Line S207](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088335) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Fall Line W212](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088354) · 1 bd · sleeps 6 - [Locke Mountain A6](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088330) · 3 bd · sleeps 9 - [Locke Mountain D1](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088332) · 4 bd · sleeps 10 - [Moose Lodge](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088340) · 6 bd · sleeps 14 - [Mountain Estate Family Getaway](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088333) · 7 bd · sleeps 16 - [Mountain Estate Main House](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088339) · 5 bd · sleeps 12 - [Pinecone Lodge](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088361) · 4 bd · sleeps 8 - [Powder & Pines](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1129151) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Roadrunner 2 A206](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088380) · sleeps 4 - [Sheridans' Getaway](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088363) · 3 bd · sleeps 6 - [SlopeSide Escape](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088376) · 1 bd · sleeps 4 - [Sunday Dream](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088351) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 - [Sunday River Village Timberline](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088331) · 4 bd · sleeps 8 - [The Mountain Bungalow](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088357) · 4 bd · sleeps 10 - [Thunder Ridge Lodge](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1088341) · 5 bd · sleeps 18 --- For photos, current rates and availability, see the page: https://www.firstchair.com/destinations/maine/sunday-river
