## The lifts keep running after dark

Keystone is the largest ski area in Summit County and the largest night skiing operation in Colorado, an hour west of Denver across three interconnected mountains and five high-alpine bowls.

Its visitors enjoy 3,149 acres of terrain paired with two walkable base villages, premier accommodations, and a family program that runs well past the last chair. Keystone spreads across Dercum Mountain, North Peak, and the Outback, climbing from a 9,280-foot base to a 12,408-foot summit with 3,128 feet of vertical. Beginners start on Dercum, intermediates have long cruisers on all three peaks, and experienced skiers head to the bowls: Independence, Bergman, Erickson, North, and South, where more than 1,000 acres of hike-to terrain sit above the trees. Night skiing runs from the River Run base on 243 lit acres, including most of the Area 51 terrain park. Off the mountain, River Run Village and Mountain House sit ten minutes apart by free shuttle, with Kidtopia programming, tubing, ice skating, and the world’s largest mountaintop snow fort.

### How do I get to Keystone?

Keystone sits about 75 miles west of Denver off I-70, roughly 90 minutes from Denver International Airport (DEN) in good conditions. Door-to-door shuttle services run regularly, including Epic Mountain Express and Summit Express.

### Do I need a rental car in Keystone?

Not if you’re staying at the resort. Free shuttles connect River Run, Mountain House, and Lakeside Village, and Summit County’s free Summit Stage bus runs from early morning until well after midnight, reaching Dillon, Silverthorne, Frisco, and Breckenridge. A car helps if you’re staying outside the base areas or want to ski other mountains on the same trip.

### What are Keystone’s three mountains?

Dercum Mountain fronts the resort above River Run and Mountain House, with beginner and intermediate terrain. North Peak sits behind it with steeper groomers and bumps. The Outback is farthest back, holding glades and access to the bowls. All three connect by lift.

### How does night skiing work?

Keystone runs the largest night skiing operation in Colorado, lighting 243 acres from the River Run base. It typically operates from early January through late March, running from late afternoon into the evening on selected days. Most of the A51 terrain park stays open, and hours vary by season, so check before you go.

### When do the back bowls close?

Earlier than the front side, which surprises visitors. The bowls generally close around 1:30 p.m., with the Windows, the Outback, and North Peak closing progressively through the afternoon. Plan back-mountain laps early and save Dercum for the end of the day.

### How big is Keystone?

Keystone covers 3,149 skiable acres across three mountains and five bowls, the largest ski area in Summit County. The base sits at 9,280 feet and the summit at 12,408, with 3,128 feet of vertical and roughly 130 trails served by about 20 lifts.

### Is Keystone good for beginners?

Yes. Dercum Mountain has dedicated learning zones at the top of the River Run Gondola, and Schoolmarm runs 3.5 miles from the summit to either base, a rare chance for a new skier to descend a whole mountain on green terrain. Just note that only about 12% of the resort is rated beginner.

### Is Keystone good for advanced skiers?

Yes. Roughly half the terrain is rated advanced or expert. Independence, Bergman, Erickson, North, and South bowls hold more than 1,000 acres of high-alpine terrain, some hike-to and some reached by paid snowcat. Glades like the Windows off the Outback add tree skiing.

### Is Keystone good for families?

It’s one of the strongest family resorts in Colorado, though the case rests on programming rather than gentle terrain. Kids 12 and under ski free with two or more nights booked directly through the resort, with no blackout dates. Kidtopia runs daily activities, and free parking and gear wagons remove friction.

### What is Kidtopia?

A season-long children’s program with daily free activities, including crafts, live music, and a parade. Its centerpiece is a large snow fort at the summit of Dercum Mountain, reachable by gondola and open to non-skiers as well.

### What else is there to do at Keystone?

Tubing, ice skating on the lake at Lakeside Village, sleigh rides, snowshoeing, and nordic skiing. Some lodging packages include free night skiing, ice skating, and nordic access. Summer brings mountain biking, lift-served sightseeing, and a festival calendar.

### How many days should I stay at Keystone?

Three to four days works well, and the proximity to Denver makes weekend trips practical. Night skiing extends short days usefully, a family arriving midday can still get on the hill. Groups renting a home often stay longer to cover all three mountains.
