Its visitors enjoy a mountain known worldwide for its steep terrain paired with a National Historic District, premier accommodations, and a summer season that draws as many people as winter. At Crested Butte Mountain Resort, beginners and intermediates have the front side, with groomed cruisers and a longest run of 2.6 miles, while experienced skiers come for the reason the mountain has its reputation: Rambo, Teocalli Bowl, and the hike-to chutes of the Extreme Limits, terrain that has hosted the U.S. Extreme Skiing Championships and the Freeride World Tour. Another 50 kilometers of groomed nordic trails run through the valley below. The town sits a few miles under the ski village at 8,885 feet, connected by a free shuttle every 15 minutes, with Victorian storefronts, restaurants, and meadows that hold more than 600 species of wildflowers in July. ## Everything you need to know ### How do I get to Crested Butte? Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC) is 28 miles south, a 30 to 40 minute drive. United flies year-round from Denver (DEN), with seasonal winter nonstops from Dallas, Houston, and Chicago on United, American, and JSX. Denver is about four hours by car via Monarch Pass. ### Can I get to Crested Butte without a car? Yes. Bustang runs from Denver to the 4-Way Stop in Crested Butte, stopping in Fairplay, Buena Vista, Salida, and Gunnison. Once you’re here, two free bus systems cover the valley. Book an airport shuttle from Gunnison: the free buses don’t serve the airport and don’t allow luggage. ### Do I need a rental car in Crested Butte? Not once you arrive. The Mountain Express connects town and Mt. Crested Butte for free, and the Gunnison Valley RTA covers the wider valley including Gunnison and Crested Butte South, also free. A car helps for exploring beyond the valley or for high-clearance summer trips. ### What’s the difference between Crested Butte and Mt. Crested Butte? Crested Butte is the historic town at 8,885 feet, a National Historic District with Victorian storefronts, restaurants, and about 1,600 residents. Mt. Crested Butte is the ski base village at 9,375 feet, built for slopeside convenience. They sit a few miles apart, connected by a free shuttle. ### Should I stay in town or at the mountain? Mt. Crested Butte puts you at the lifts with ski-in/ski-out accommodations and the fastest mornings. The town has Elk Avenue’s shops, restaurants, and bars, and generally more variety. The free Mountain Express runs between them every 15 minutes, so either works. ### Can beginners ski Crested Butte? Yes, though it isn’t primarily a learning mountain. The front side has groomed intermediate cruisers and a longest run of 2.6 miles, and there’s dedicated beginner terrain. But the resort’s reputation is built on expert skiing, and new skiers will find gentler mountains elsewhere in Colorado. ### Is Crested Butte good for advanced skiers? It’s one of the most demanding mountains in the country. Rambo, Teocalli Bowl, and the hike-to chutes of the Extreme Limits draw expert skiers internationally, with hundreds of acres of double-black terrain. The mountain has hosted the U.S. Extreme Skiing Championships and the Freeride World Tour. ### What are the “Extreme Limits”? A collection of steep, hike-to expert terrain including chutes, cliff bands, and rugged natural features. Access depends on snowpack, so much of it opens later in the season. This is the terrain that built Crested Butte’s reputation, and it isn’t forgiving. ### How big is Crested Butte Mountain Resort? The resort covers 1,547 skiable acres across 121 runs, with a summit at 12,162 feet and a base at 9,375. The longest run stretches 2.6 miles. It’s smaller than some Colorado resorts by acreage but weighted heavily toward advanced and expert terrain. ### Is Crested Butte a good place to visit in the summer? Yes, for many visitors it’s the better season. Beyond the wildflowers, the valley holds roughly 800 miles of singletrack, and Crested Butte is one of the places that claims to have started mountain biking. Hiking, rafting, and fishing round it out. ### Is Kebler Pass open? Only in warmer months. Kebler Pass connects Crested Butte westward toward Paonia on Highway 133 and closes for winter, meaning all winter access comes through Gunnison. It’s worth the summer drive—one of the largest aspen groves in the country grows along it, spectacular in fall. ### Why is Crested Butte called the wildflower capital? The Colorado state legislature gave it the designation. More than 600 species bloom in the surrounding valleys, peaking from late June through July. The annual Wildflower Festival in July includes guided hikes and photography workshops, and it’s one of the busiest weeks of the year. ### How many days should I stay in Crested Butte? Four to five days works well. The travel is a commitment whether you fly or drive, and the town rewards time beyond the ski day. Groups renting a home often stay a week, especially in summer when the trail network opens up. ## All homes in Crested Butte - [Alpine 4](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090754) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 - [Away Out on the Mountain](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091630) · sleeps 2 - [Beautiful Mountain View Condo](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091625) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 - [Blue Sky Porch](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091652) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 - [Butte Basecamp](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090749) · 2 bd · sleeps 5 - [Crested Beauty](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090563) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 - [Crested Butte's Dream Studio GL270](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091627) · sleeps 2 - [Emmons Condo #427](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090750) · 2 bd · sleeps 8 - [Enchanted Alps - Whole Home](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091636) · 4 bd · sleeps 10 - [GL306 Butte Gem](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090562) · sleeps 4 - [Gothic Getaway](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090748) · 1 bd · sleeps 3 - [Grand Lodge #151](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090752) · sleeps 4 - [Grand Lodge #553](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090608) · sleeps 4 - [Haverly Mountain Retreat](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091646) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [Hidden Treasure at Ponderosa](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090557) · 2 bd · sleeps 5 - [Meridian Lake Home](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090560) · 5 bd · sleeps 10 - [Mountain Getaway](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090587) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 - [Mountain Jewel](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091624) · 3 bd · sleeps 6 - [Mountainside Living](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091632) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 - [Ponderosa 2A](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090753) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 - [Ski-riffic](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091631) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 - [Slopeside Paradise at Axtel](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090555) · 1 bd · sleeps 4 - [Snow Star Lodge](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091621) · 3 bd · sleeps 10 - [Snowmass Haven](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090566) · 3 bd · sleeps 7 - [Summit View Hideaway](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091650) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 - [The Mountain Delight](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091622) · 2 bd · sleeps 5 - [The Mountain Majesty](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090757) · 3 bd · sleeps 8 - [The Snowflower Retreat](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090551) · 2 bd · sleeps 4 - [Treasury Retreat](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090329) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 --- For photos, current rates and availability, see the page: https://www.firstchair.com/destinations/colorado/crested-butte
