The four mountains each serve a different skier: Buttermilk has no black diamond runs and is built for learning, Snowmass covers more than 3,300 acres with the highest vertical rise in the country at 4,400 feet, Aspen Mountain rises straight out of downtown, and Aspen Highlands holds the Highland Bowl and has no beginner terrain at all. Together they total more than 5,700 acres, and free buses run between all four and downtown. ## Everything you need to know ### How do I get to Aspen? Aspen/Pitkin County Airport (ASE) sits three miles from downtown Aspen and six miles from Snowmass Village, with nonstop flights from nine cities on United, Delta, and American. Eagle County Airport (EGE) is 70 miles away (about an hour and a half drive) with winter nonstop service from 14 cities. Denver International Airport (DEN) is roughly four hours away by car, and offers the most flight options with shuttles running the route daily. ### How far is Aspen from Denver? Flights from Denver to Aspen take about an hour. By car, it’s roughly four hours. In summer, Independence Pass offers a shorter, more scenic route, though it’s closed the rest of the year. ### Do I need a rental car in Aspen? No. Free RFTA buses run between downtown Aspen, Snowmass Village, Aspen Highlands, and Buttermilk from morning to evening, stopping at base areas and hotels. Within Snowmass Village, a free shuttle loops every 10–20 minutes. A car only helps for trips beyond the valley. ### Which Aspen mountain should I ski? It depends on your skill level. Buttermilk has no black diamond runs and is built for learning. Snowmass is the largest with more than 3,300 acres with terrain for everyone. Aspen Mountain rises from downtown and skews intermediate to expert. Aspen Highlands is advanced-only, with no beginner terrain at all. ### Should I stay in Aspen or Snowmass Village? Aspen puts you in a walkable historic downtown with the densest dining, gallery, and nightlife scene. Snowmass Village is quieter, more ski-in/ski-out, and better suited to families spread across multiple bedrooms. Free buses connect the two, so either works regardless of which mountain you ski. ### Is Aspen on the Ikon Pass? Yes. The Ikon Pass includes seven days across all four Aspen Snowmass mountains. Any single lift ticket is good at all four on the same day. ### Can beginners ski Aspen? Yes, though where you go matters. Buttermilk is purpose-built for learning with no black diamond terrain. Snowmass has a strong beginner zone at Fanny Hill and Sam’s Knob plus long green cruisers to progress onto. Skip Aspen Highlands entirely as a first-timer, it has no beginner runs. ### Is Aspen good for advanced skiers? Yes. Aspen Highlands is famous for Highland Bowl, with steep terrain including runs approaching 45 degrees. Aspen Mountain drops more than 3,200 vertical feet of classic Colorado steeps straight into town. Snowmass has the highest vertical rise in the country at 4,400 feet. ### Is Aspen a good place to visit in the summer? Yes. All four mountains open for hiking and biking, with the Snowmass Bike Park, gondola sightseeing on Ajax and Elk Camp, and Aspen Highlands serving as the gateway to the Maroon Bells. Free outdoor concerts, races, and yoga run through the season. ### Is Independence Pass open? Only in warm months, typically late May through October. Highway 82 over the pass is the shortest route from Denver but closes for winter. Navigation apps sometimes route you over it anyway, so confirm before following directions between November and May. ### How long should I stay in Aspen? Four to five days lets you ski more than one mountain and still have time in town. Three is workable if you’re flying into Aspen directly. Groups renting a home often stay a week, which allows a different mountain each day. ### Is Aspen good for families? Yes. Buttermilk is one of the most beginner-friendly mountains in Colorado, Snowmass Village is built around family lodging with a free internal shuttle, and free buses mean parents and kids can ski different mountains and meet up for dinner. ## All homes in Aspen - [Altitude Haus](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090421) · 4 bd · sleeps 8 - [Aspen Meadows Resort 111](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090412) · 3 bd · sleeps 7 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 100](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091504) · sleeps 3 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 102](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091503) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 103](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091496) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 104](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090441) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 105](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090432) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 106](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090431) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 107](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090440) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 108](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090439) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 109](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090607) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 110](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090606) · sleeps 3 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 111](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091491) · sleeps 3 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 200](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091490) · sleeps 2 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 201](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091489) · sleeps 2 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 202](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090434) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 203](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091495) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 204](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091492) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 205](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090438) · sleeps 2 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 206](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090437) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 207](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091485) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 208](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090420) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 209](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091486) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 210](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090436) · sleeps 2 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 211](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090633) · sleeps 2 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 300](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091487) · sleeps 2 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 301](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090521) · sleeps 2 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 302](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090442) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 303](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090430) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 304](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090429) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 305](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091483) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 306](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090426) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 307](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090428) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 308](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090427) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 309](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090425) · sleeps 4 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 310](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091473) · sleeps 2 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 311](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090423) · sleeps 2 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 401](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090614) · sleeps 2 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 402](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091493) · sleeps 2 - [Aspen Mountain Lodge 403](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091484) · sleeps 2 - [Lichenhearth # 4](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090465) · sleeps 4 - [Mountain Valley Hideaway -Upper Level](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090410) · 4 bd · sleeps 7 - [Snowmass Village 20C](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090330) · 2 bd · sleeps 7 - [Snowmass Village 22EF](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1091474) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 - [Snowmass Village A4](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090414) · 3 bd · sleeps 6 - [Tamarack 36](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090422) · 3 bd · sleeps 9 - [Wood Road House](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090411) · 5 bd · sleeps 10 - [Woodbridge 30E](https://www.firstchair.com/property/1090601) · 2 bd · sleeps 6 --- For photos, current rates and availability, see the page: https://www.firstchair.com/destinations/colorado/aspen
