"The key to not only finding a job but an opportunity for a fulfilling career is to connect with a business where both sides will benefit and thrive from the partnership,” says Jenny Grisham, owner of Americana in Alpine, TX.
The key to getting a salon job, if you have no experience, is to concentrate on the skills that you do have and you know you can contribute to the salon. According to Grisham, follow these three steps and you can get closer to getting a job at a salon:
STEP 1: Do some serious soul searching. Identify your personal and professional core values, which will enable you to determine the kind of business you will thrive in. Clarify your goals in the salon industry and develop a roadmap. Knowing whether or not an opportunity will help you move forward is very important.
STEP 2: Research and investigate. Rather than only applying for salon jobs advertised in the newspaper, look for less obvious opportunities. Stop in every salon or spa you see. Ask for a tour and ask questions pertaining to your core values to find out how the business really operates. Watch the staff, how they work and if they are busy. Ask staff about their employment if possible. Read the mission statement and vision often printed on menus or
posted on websites.
STEP 3: When you find a place you think would be a good fit, take them a resume with a cover letter. Explain why you think hiring you would benefit them and that if there are currently no openings that you would happily consider a position with them in the future. Ask to meet the owner or manager and compliment them on their business using terms that prove you understand and appreciate specific aspects of their culture. You will be the first one they think of when someone leaves and you never know, they may let an individual go who is not aligned with their values in order to bring you in.
