Hair Cuttery started with one salon and two Stylists back in 1974. Dennis Ratner was an up-and-coming hairdresser working in his father's Louis salon in Washington, D.C. Ann Ratner, also a stylist, had recently moved from the U.K. to the United States. It was the beginning of a new era, and the partners envisioned a unisex salon convenient for the whole family. Over dinner they sketched on a cocktail napkin a business plan that laid the groundwork for the first Hair Cuttery salon.
With only $5,000, Dennis and Ann opened the first Hair Cuttery in West Springfield, Virginia, introducing a revolutionary new brand of salon where clients could walk in and get a new look with no appointment necessary. Now with nearly 1,000 salons on the East Coast, in the Chicago area and in the United Kingdom–and plans to open more in the coming year–Hair Cuttery is the largest privately-held full-service salon chain in the United States.
Hair Cuttery offers a full complement of services from haircuts and color to facial waxing and texturizing services, as well a wide selection of professional products. Located in convenient suburban locations, our salons provide more than 16 million services each year.
“I started out as a Stylist. I became an Assistant Salon Leader and then I became a Color Educator and worked my way up through the ranks. That is the great thing about Hair Cuttery; you can do just about anything.â€
-Daniel Carter, Stylist, Atlanta,GA
“Hair Cuttery is wonderful. I have moved from a Stylist to a National Level Trainer and they send me all over the country and allow me to interact with international stars from many, many companies.â€
- Marie Wing, Stylist, Yardley, PA
“I think, especially for people coming straight from beauty school, Hair Cuttery’s great because we have walk-ins, so there’s not this huge pressure off the bat to bring in customers. You do good work and they’ll come back.â€
